Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of high carb intake?
Carbohydrates = energy. When done properly, taking in 90+ grams of carbs per hour can deliver increased energy, reduce perceived exertion and lower markers of muscle damage so you can push harder, for longer.
Why do I need to train my body to absorb High Carb Fuel?
The typical limit for carbohydrate absorption without training your gut is around 60g per hour. To avoid GI distress, we recommend slowly increasing your carbohydrate intake over a period of several weeks. Think of it as building to a peak for your most important events, just like you do in training.
How do I train my body to absorb 90g of carbohydrates per hour?
We recommend using the timeline below to increase your tolerance for carbohydrates. Train with High Carb Fuel during your high intensity training sessions and workouts that mimic the event you are training for. For lighter or recovery workouts, stick with Rapid Hydration or Endurance Fuel.
Week 1: One packet of High Carb Fuel over 90 minutes
Week 2: One packet over 80 minutes
Week 3: One packet over 70 minutes
Week 4: One packet over 60 minutes
What are the differences between High Carb Fuel and Endurance Fuel?
Endurance Fuel:
- 50g of carbohydrates, 200 calories and 610mg of sodium per single serving packet
- Steady energy is provided by non-GMO dextrose (glucose) and cane sugar
- Easily absorbed without gut training/very low GI risk
- Complete electrolytes
- Clean, light flavors; less sweet than HCF
- Intended for sustained long duration efforts over one hour in length
High Carb Fuel:
- 90g of carbohydrates, 360 calories and 660mg of sodium per single serving packet
- Energy is provided by dextrose (glucose), maltodextrin, and fructose
- Complete electrolytes
- Gut training required
- Higher sweetness than Endurance Fuel
- Intended for high intensity efforts when maximising energy uptake is critical
When should I use High Carb Fuel?
Use High Carb Fuel during high intensity training and racing when you need to sustain a high work rate.
How do I use High Carb Fuel?
Mix one packet with 16-24oz (500-750ml) of water, shake and go! Sip regularly over one hour. High Carb Fuel can also be mixed at the lower range of the water recommendation in a more concentrated form. If using it as a concentrate, make sure to drink plenty of water in addition to your High Carb mixture.
What are the carbohydrates in High Carb Fuel?
High Carb Fuel contains dextrose (glucose), maltodextrin and fructose. Dextrose and fructose are simple sugars which absorb quickly, while maltodextrin provides additional glucose and minimises sweetness. This formula provides a pleasant flavour profile and mixes easily in water.
Can I mix High Carb Fuel with other products to increase the sodium content?
Tailwind High Carb Fuel contains 680mg of sodium per serving which should be enough, even for heavy sweaters. We recommend increasing water intake before adding more electrolytes to maintain the balance between water and electrolytes in your bloodstream.
Can I use High Carb Fuel with gels or other Tailwind Products?
High Carb Fuel is meant to be a complete source for energy, electrolytes and calories. Since High Carb Fuel maximises absorption via the glucose and fructose transports, adding gels or other drink mixes to your fueling program increases the risk of GI distress from incomplete absorption.
